general sacred space

Sacred Spaces

I had another post ready to go. But that one can wait. Harvey and Irma and 9/11 are too raw, still. They have shifted my space for the moment, and looking around at my world, my space feels very sacred.

In moments like these, when the fragility of life moves in, space resonates with a different quality. It strips away all the “otherness” that we sometimes feel: Republican, Democrat, Woman, Man…yes, we must honor the different space that we all take up. That is important. We are not the same.

And yet, when these moments happen, I feel a shift myself. Do you? Do you feel that those things, once so important, fall away? Or do they become heightened? Even more important?

How do we take up space on 9/11? I honor that day with the lightening of a candle. Why? Because that day altered our space. We emerged from it different. We were changed, and I think that change should be honored.

And what about Harvey and Irma? They too, changed us. We all were forced to move and change our space. Whether it was the residences of Houston and Florida, physically moving from point-to-point, or those of us watching the reporting, changing our perceptions of Climate Change, perhaps, or moved to donate or volunteer.

Sacred events call for sacred responses.

Sacred responses cause us to move differently within the world.

Such responses cause us to take up space, differently.

We must! We cannot live through such events without being changed. So I wonder tonight, as I write this post, how have you been changed by the hurricanes? What about 9/11. It’s been 16 years, and yet, it seems like yesterday that our hearts were broken in ways unimaginable!

What does space mean to you, right now?

Call to action: Sit, light a candle, and reflect on all that has gone on this week.
