A Space Without Smartphones

Presence. Fully-present. Active. Thoughtful.

Yesterday was my anniversary, so I treated myself to a delicious, lovely, restful, indulgent, and much-needed pedicure. What a treat.

As I sat down in the chair and answered my nail technician’s questions, I started to reach for my phone.

And then…I paused, put the phone back, and leaned back in the chair.

I’ve been thinking a lot about tech addiction and why we always have a phone in hand. Take a minute and look around. Everyone is always on their cell phones. Always.

In the store. Waiting in line. Waiting for the bus. At a restaurant. At sports games. Where ever!

My childhood started before cell phones were the norm. Now, I’m not saying that the 1970’s or 1980’s were better, I’m just saying they were different.

And that gives me pause.

As I look around and see us all glued to the screen, I wonder what we are losing. What are we missing? Where have our connections gone? Does anyone talk face-to-face anymore? Are we hearing our children? Are we daydreaming? Are we unplugging?

I’m reading two great books right now: The Hands Free Mama and How to Breakup with your Phone. They are thought-provoking and I highly recommend them!

Why? Because we are missing life. Missing it! Missing our kid’s smiles and human contact and the earth!

So yesterday, when I leaned back in the chair, I was fully present in that moment. I felt the massage, heard the sounds, smelled the smells, and felt….well….regenerated. I fully immersed myself in that very moment.

Fully present.

What a gift! Don’t believe me? Try it.

Leave your phone in your purse or in the other room. How do you feel? Relaxed? Twitchy? Free?

And then allow yourself to just be. To listen. To breathe. To think. To contemplate. To hear. To be fully present in that precious moment.

Call to Action: Put your phone away and remember what it means to be fully-present in each and every moment.
