A Space for Walking Across America

My friend is walking across the US.
Let me say that again.
My friend is walking across the US; a literal walk from Charleston, South Carolina to San Francisco, California.
He is Peter Munson, and I want you to remember his name. (That is a picture of him, above.) He’s walking to raise awareness for children in need both in the US and abroad. Along his walk, he will be speaking with organizations and ministries that serve children, blogging, and recording short videos of his adventures.
Sometimes, he will be walking alone. Sometimes, he will be joined by friends and supporters. But he will walk.
And walk.
And walk until November when he reaches San Francisco.
I first met Peter only a few years ago through my husband’s church. At the time, he was the priest at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado. He married us and baptized our son. Big life stuff, so he’s an important guy in our lives.
And after 27 years, he just recently stepped down from the priesthood and into his walking shoes to do something different. And this “thing” will be no less impactful on people’s lives.
He is still ministering. He is still healing. He is still praying.
If you’d like to follow his journey, you can go to his website: www.6millionstepsforkids.org. He created a non-profit to support his mission. And on his site, you can read about the organizations he’s helping, make donations, and also follow his route as he makes his journey west.
I am humbled by his quest, by his call to do something. Through seeking change, he too, will be changed and transformed.
Be the change. The entire quote by Gandhi is: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. This sentence is packed full of action! We cannot sit idly by.
Peter is certainly not being idle. His physical movements mirror his internal quest to bring help and comfort to children.
And in the process, he has moved me to become an even better version of myself.
What will it be?
I think our contributions don’t have to be so bold as to walk across America (although, they could be). But that was Peter’s calling. Ours will be different and just as wonderful.
Maybe it will be a donation, or feeding the homeless, or volunteering in a child’s classroom, or teaching yoga in a prison, or holding babies in a hospital
There are so many ways to help; so find one that rings true to you and do it. Don’t put it off. Get off the couch and make that mental walk with Peter.
Hold him in your thoughts.
We are sending you so much love and light, dear Peter.
God speed!
