A Space for Spring

I know, I’m getting ahead of myself…a bit. We haven’t even turned the clocks yet.
And it’s still February.
And it’s still freezing in the west.
And the ground is still covered with patches of ice and snow.
And a few days ago, we experienced a Snow Squall in Colorado. The National Weather service defines it as “an intense short-lived burst of heavy snowfall” with intense winds where “visibilities can turn to whiteout conditions in a matter of seconds”. Who knew that was a thing!
Sigh…Old Man Winter, what other tricks do you have up your sleeve?
But I’ve also been hearing something a bit hopeful as well, something that diverts my attention away from the squalls and the ice and the darkness.
Birds singing in the morning.
In the dead of winter, the silence and darkness can feel oppressive.
But lately, I’ve been hearing their sweet morning melodies, sometimes a chorus of them, sometimes a solo singer greets my day, but they are always rich and vibrant, and a reminder of what is to come.
That is the way of Spring, I suppose.
Cold and ice and darkness get gently nudged out of the way as Spring finally stretches into her space and brings with her light and warmth and green.
And the flowers! My glorious laughing friends of color and light and proof of growth.
You are already preparing to emerge. Even now, with the cold and dark, you are here. You are moving. You are taking up your own glorious space.
I cannot wait to greet you.
I cannot wait to see my sunflowers swaying the summer heat and light.
Dear Spring, we are ready for your arrival.
We love and appreciate the world as it is now…with a bit of anticipation for what is to come.
I for one can already feel the warm blanket that is Spring!
And I am grateful.
