A Space for Fall

I feel a shift going on. It’s always this way as we transition from summer to fall in Colorado.

Tuesday was the first official day of the new season, but out here in the west, the hot and dry summer holds on; its death-grip, unwavering.

Fires still burn.

The air, at times is still dense with smoke and ash.

And yet, the earth knows change is coming.

I recognize her signs, subtle, yet there.

Fall is hovering on the edges…of leaves and of my consciousness.

The mountains are already bursting with the golden hues of change: yellow, red, orange. Brilliant reminders that life continues to move.

That despite the times, despite the despair, despite the ugliness of 2020, the earth continues.

Change continues.

The early mornings are my favorite.

I wake and feel the chilliness of change.

Coffee in hand, I breathe in the gentle stillness and coolness of the dark and await dawn to break. Later and later, it is no less brilliant.

And just like that, it is here. Light and a new revelation of change. More yellow leaves have fallen overnight. A mere breeze brings them down, now.

Flocks of geese fly overhead.

And I lean into the comfort of knowing that life moves on; that fall always comes; that the geese continue to fly, and that the leaves continue to fall.

Yes, there is still work to do and battles to fight.

But for now, I’ll just sit in this quiet moment of change and thank Love as she wraps her arms around me and gives me strength to continue.
