A Space for Orion

I did the craziest thing this week. I picked up a magazine and started reading. I know…so very 20th century! I hadn’t read a magazine in years.

I’m not talking about those that you pick up and thumb through at the doctor’s office, or while you wait in line at the grocery store. I’m not that excited about People magazine.

This week, I picked up Orion magazine. Have you heard of it?

Wikipedia says: “Orion is a quarterly, advertisement-free, nonprofit magazine focused on nature, culture, and place addressing environmental and societal issues.”

And for a gal who writes about space and place, it was a delight to read. I was craving long words and thoughtful ideas.

Enough with the twitter-verse and exclamation marks already!

I wanted to read something that had depth; something that was embedded within a larger picture, something that moved me to action.

And Orion didn’t disappoint.

It only comes out four times a year, so you have time…time to read and ponder. There’s no rush. And with no advertisements, the words wash over you, uninterrupted, and transport you to places unknown.

In the Spring edition, I contemplated the effects of climate change on ecology and native peoples. I wondered at rattle-less rattlesnakes. I journeyed to Canada with the Caribou, and held my breath as an invisible bear made its presence known in a corn field.

I chose the paper edition. I love holding it in my hands and feeling the pages, it keeps me grounded in the present; but you can subscribe to and read their digital copies if that’s more your jam.

People and nature. Environment as a character. Place as a presence…I love to contemplate them all.

Happy Reading and have a safe holiday weekend!
