earth poem silence stretch

A Space for Poetry

I wrote this poem not longer after my son was born in 2016. I loved writing it then! But today, re-reading it, I love it even more. With the state of the world as it is, it takes on a new and lovely meaning. I hope you enjoy it!

The Hush of the Morning

Those mornings, when I’m up with the sun, I feel the hush that quiets the land. Even in my small town, the day starts out slow, contemplative, before the brilliance of a full morning stretches awake the day.

Tinged with crimson, the sky, ablaze with color muffles the movement and sound of the planet, if only for a moment.

A precious moment, when I feel myself as connected with something greater than me. I run to the pulse of the planet.

I breathe deeply the oxygen her trees convert for me.

It is a hush of the morning, when the day is still stretching and the sky is yawning color and coolness.

And I am quiet and contemplative in the gift of the hush of the morning.
