sacred space

A Space of Refuge

Today, I saw that picture of the little two year old girl separated at the border from her mother, and sobbed with her. I just wanted to take her in my arms.

Didn’t you?

Sweet, precious child, you are not alone. You a loved…so very loved!

I know nothing of this child. Her name. Her family. Her history. Her status.

I. Do. Not. Care.

You, sweet girl, are so very much more than all of that.

You are precious because you are you.

I sobbed for my own two year old and held him tight.

I sobbed for our country, what have we become?

I sobbed for humanity, praying that allies and friends have not been forever lost.

I sobbed…

Such sadness and ugliness in the world today.

And then, I looked toward the sun. I looked towards a different space.

This blog is about hope and finding spaces of authenticity.

And sometimes, doing just that, in the face of sobbing despair, is a choice. A very difficult and challenging choice.

But how lucky I am that I even have that choice.

I let myself, feel.

I let myself get angry.

I let myself pace about the room.

I let myself do what I needed to do.

And I will continue to do that as long as I need to.

But in the midst of letting myself do, I also choose to look towards the sun.

I feel her warmth and know that even when the clouds roll in and the rain falls, she is there.

Always!…she is there.

Sweet child, I see you.

I hear you.

I acknowledge your lovely presence on this earth.

I don’t have an answer for the ugliness I see coming from my country.

I don’t know what I can do to help these children.

I don’t know….

What I do know, is that I can hug my child tighter.

And listen intently to his words.

And soak in his precious face.

I can be a better citizen.

I can write letters and call officials.

I can do something!

And so can you.

What will that be?
